Why we need to be Civically Engaged: CA Cap and Trade Failure

The data tells us that our beautiful planet πŸŒŽ is warming and that humans are responsible (but wait, we can fix this!)

🚩 We can fix this if we reduce our carbon emissions and remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

🚩 We can fix this if we scale with policies like cap and trade, carbon tax, and carbon fee and dividend (check out this bill introduced last week in congress: https://citizensclimatelobby.org/energy-innovation-and-car…/).

🚩 We can fix this if we insist on serious oversight into the implementation of these solutions. Here is why:

In 2017, governor Jerry Brown championed, and passed a cap and trade bill, with the intent of reducing carbon emissions in California.

However. in December of 2018, it was announced that this legislation was ineffective at reducing CO2 emissions. This was because of a political deal with oil industry. See more here from Vox https://www.vox.com/…/california-climate-cap-and-trade-jerr…

πŸ’‘Imagine all of the hours that people put towards such a piece of legislation: there are people who draft the bill, there are those who contact their representatives, there are those who raise awareness by knocking on doors and posting on social media.

Despite all of this work, there was insufficient transparency and oversight into the implementation of the bill, to ensure that it was implemented correctly.

☝️So, what can we do going forward? Demand transparency and serious oversight on the implementation. How can we do this? Show up. Call your representative about this. Write to the local paper. Let’s talk.
